On July 29, 2024, at approximately 18:20, I was dispatched to the intersection of Chattanooga Rd and N Tibbs Rd in reference to a hit and run accident.
Upon arrival, I made contact with [VICTIM #1], who was the driver of the 2017 Nissan Rogue. [VICTIM #1] stated she was traveling south on the left lane of Chattanooga Rd approaching the intersection at N Tibbs Rd when a car exiting the Marathon Gas Station parking lot crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle. [VICTIM #1] stated she stopped and saw the other vehicle turn left onto Chattanooga Road and began traveling north, leaving the scene of the accident. I attached photos of her vehicle to the report.
A witness, [WITNESS #1], followed the vehicle north bound on Chattanooga Rd and was able to get the license plate [REDACTED] and a vehicle description. [WITNESS #1] stated he witnessed the accident as he was traveling north on Chattanooga Rd. When he noticed the CR-V continue to turn north bound on Chattanooga Rd, he decided to follow it and gather the license plate and vehicle description. [WITNESS #1] stated he called 911 and gave them the information he retrieved. The Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) began investigating the information [WITNESS #1] provided.
An employee at Holmes Spirits, [REDACTED], came outside and told us that he acquired security footage that shows the crash. [REDACTED] stated his friend witnessed the crash after exiting the store and called and told him about it. He stated that once he learned about the crash, he began to look at the security cameras to see if the store had a camera pointed in that direction. I attached the surveillance video to the report.
In the video, a red Honda CR-V is pulling out of the Marathon Gas Station attempting to turn left onto Chattanooga Rd. As the CR-V exits the parking lot, the Rogue comes up on the left lane and the CR-V crashes into the passenger side of the Rogue. The CR-V then continues to turn left on Chattanooga Rd and travels north.
The WCSO advised they would arrive to [200 BLOCK] Varnell Railroad St to attempt to make contact with the driver of the CR-V. Once they confirmed the identity of the driver as Donald Greeson, I traveled to the address to meet with Greeson.
Upon arrival, I read Greeson his miranda rights and began asking him questions related to the accident. Greeson stated that he was driving the CR-V at the time of the crash. Greeson stated he was exiting the Marathon Gas Station parking lot when a car left a space open for him to cross. When he began to drive forward, he did not see the Rogue approaching and crashed into the passenger side of the vehicle. He stated he was scared when the accident happened because he knew the vehicle did not have insurance.
I placed Greeson under arrest for leaving the scene of the accident. I searched him in front of the patrol car, no contraband was found. I confirmed he is a United States citizen and searched the back seat, no contraband was found. I secured him in the seat belt and transported him to the WCSO jail.
Upon arrival, our weapons were secured in the trunk of the patrol car. I transferred custody to WCSO booking staff and searched the back seat again, no contraband was found. Greeson’s property was turned over to booking staff. There were no known medical or security issues. I wrote Greeson four citations and turned them in to booking staff.
Greeson was cited for leaving the scene of an accident (#636379), failure to yield while turning left (#636380), no insurance (#636381), and operating without proper tag/decal (#636382).
