On Friday September 6, 2024
I, Deputy Ayla Morris, was dispatched to 302 Hwy 18 E, Autumn Lane Health and Rehabilitation, in reference to a report of sexual battery.
Upon my arrival I made with the Administrator, [WITNESS ], and Social Worker, [WITNESS ], of Autumn Lane Health and Rehabilitation. Mr. [WITNESS ] introduced to the woman sitting beside him in a wheelchair, Mrs. [VICTIM ]. Mr. [WITNESS ] and Mrs. [WITNESS ] escorted Mrs. [VICTIM ] and myself to a private room. Mr. [WITNESS ] excused himself leaving myself, Mrs. [WITNESS ], and Mrs. [VICTIM ] in the room.
Mrs. [VICTIM ] then explained to me that her brother, Curtis Barfield Jr., was propositioning her for sexual intercourse, oral sex, and other forms of sexual gratification. Mrs. [VICTIM ] explained Mr. Barfield asked her to “suck his tities” and suck on his dck”. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised Mr. Barfield also asked if he could perform oral sex to her and orally stimulate her breasts. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised the requests occurred when he visited her at this facility and has only occurred since she has been a resident here, before and after they moved locations. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised she has acquiesced to Mr. Barfields requests, except sexual intercourse. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised on todays date Mr. Barfield asked her for sexual intercourse and she refused. Mrs. [WITNESS ] then stated earlier in the day Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised Mr. Barfield made Mrs. [VICTIM ] fondle his t*sticles over his pants. Mrs. [WITNESS ] advised Mrs. [VICTIM ] stated sometimes Mr. Barfield pulls his pants down and requests she fondle his genitals. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised when Mr. Barfield takes her to her doctors appointments he also propositions her for sexual acts and gratification by asking to touch her breasts and/or for sexual intercourse.
Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised she has engaged in oral sex with Mr. Barfield at his request. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised she does so thinking he will leave her alone afterwards but she advised he always comes back and asks her again. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised Mr. Barfield does get upset with her when she refuses sexual intercourse but he has never forced himself on her and they have never had sexual intercourse. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised when Mr. Barfield requests some form of sexual gratification she refuses as much as she can but eventually gives in so he will leave her alone. Mrs. [VICTIM ] expressed great concern for her sister who she advised suffers from cardiac issues, and her sister in law. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised she has not expressed these issues yet because she fears it “will kill her sister”.
Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised she does not want her sister to know and Mrs. [WITNESS ] added that Mrs. [VICTIM ] also did not want to file a police report. Mrs. [WITNESS ] advised the nursing staff did a physical exam of Mrs. [VICTIM ] and found a bruise on her chest. Mrs. [WITNESS ] advised in Mrs. [VICTIM ]s statements to her earlier in the day, Mrs. [VICTIM ] stated Mr. Barfield was “grabbing at her chest”. Mrs. [VICTIM ] stated she does not know where the bruise came from and was adamant her brother did not cause it. I asked Mrs. [VICTIM ] if Mr. Barfield was ever physically forceful with her and she advised he was not.
Mrs. [VICTIM ] could not advise when these advances began, but did state they only began when she became a resident of this facility. Mrs. [VICTIM ] advised the advances stopped for a time and then started back approximately a year ago. Mrs. [WITNESS ] pointed out there are some omissions from Mrs. [VICTIM ]s recounting to me, and that she suspected Mrs. [VICTIM ] was fatigued. I suggested a follow-up interview Monday morning when Mrs. [WITNESS ] could again be present and she agreed. Mrs. [WITNESS ] then escorted Mrs. [VICTIM ] back to her room.
Mrs. [WITNESS ] and myself joined Mr. [WITNESS ] back in the front office. Mr. [WITNESS ] advised that when they score patients for mental capacity Mrs. [VICTIM ] excels, and therefore is determined to be mentally sound and sane. Mr. [WITNESS ] advised he does want Mr. Barfield criminally trespassed. I explained to Mr. [WITNESS ] that would be no problem at all, however Mr. Barfield would then know there was an issue and could take control of the family dynamic, harming the victims mental state, stance, and narrative as it pertains to the victims sister. Mr. [WITNESS ] agreed and advised me to wait on the criminal trespass and see if they could persuade Mrs. [VICTIM ] to notify her sister herself. Mr. [WITNESS ] and Mrs. [WITNESS ] assured me that despite that Mr. Barfield does not have access to Mrs. [VICTIM ]. I advised them if Mr. Barfield did come to the facility and there was any issue to call us immediately. Mr. [WITNESS ] was advised of the follow-up interview scheduled for Monday morning. I advised Mr. [WITNESS ] and Mrs. [WITNESS ] that in the meantime if anything was needed to call back.
Inv. Murphy was briefed on this case.
