On 08/27/2024
, at approximately 0814 hours, I, Deputy Y. Bruney, was employed at the Houston County Sheriff’s Office and assigned to WIN Academy as a School Resource Officer. On the above date, I was notified by radio about needing assistance in the 200 hallway.
Information:
While conducting morning check ins, I was notified by the front desk clerk that assistance was needed in the 200 hallway. Upon my arrival, I saw victim, [REDACTED BY AGENCY], and Offender, Sy’Rique Evans, in the hallway; arguing with each other. I had both students separated. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated Sy’Rique was choking her. Sy’Rique did not deny the allegation, and responded with “she should have never tried me”. Immediately I detained Sy’Rique by placing his hands behind his back, double locked and checked for proper fit. While in the 200 hallway, I spoke with two teachers, who stated they did not see anything. That was when Assistant Principal of Discipline, Dr. [REDACTED] stated a student witnessed Sy’Rique choke [REDACTED BY AGENCY] then let go once she alerted any teacher near by.
Witness, [REDACTED BY AGENCY], stated [REDACTED BY AGENCY] came from room 203 to grab some paperwork from a teacher in room 201. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] said she and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] walked out of 201, heading back to 203, and all of a sudden Sy’rique came from behind [REDACTED BY AGENCY], and put her in a chokehold then forcibly dragged her to the ground. She said he did not let go until she yelled for help. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] wrote a witness statement explaining what she saw.
While Sy’Rique was detained, he stated he and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] were just “playing around”. He stated he had no further comments.
[REDACTED BY AGENCY] wrote a witness statement as well. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated she walked out of the classroom to get papers from Sy’Rique’s classroom. She said after she walked out he ran from behind her and choked her until Mrs. [REDACTED] came out of the classroom. She said [REDACTED BY AGENCY] had to knock on the door to get someone’s attention.
While examining [REDACTED BY AGENCY], I noticed the bridge around her nose and her left cheek was a little red, possibly from being hit when Sy’Rique was wrapping his forearm around her neck.
After the incident, Assistant Principal of Discipline escorted [REDACTED] to the school nurse to be checked for injuries.
Nurse [REDACTED] stated [REDACTED BY AGENCY]’s heart rate was elevated, which was normal after an incident like being choked. She said she did not observe any bruises on injuries when [REDACTED BY AGENCY] came to get checked. She did inform me that 30 minutes after being checked, [REDACTED BY AGENCY] did come back to her office and told her that her neck down to her spine was hurting.
Video Review:
It appeared [REDACTED] came out of room 203 at approximately 0814 hours and walked to room 201 until approximately 0816 hours. At that time, she and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] came out simultaneously, walking back toward room 203. A few moments later, a black male, wearing a white short sleeve shirt, with a yellow long sleeve shirt underneath (same clothing Sy’rique was wearing) came out of 201, crouched and running toward [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. Once he caught up to her, he immediately placed her in a chokehold, using one arm to wrap around her neck, and the other arm wrapped around her upper torso. He then took her to the ground and did not get up until room 203 door opened.
Conclusion:
Due to the substantial testimonial evidence, and the fact Sy’Rique did not deny the incident, I made the decision to charge him with Aggravated Assault – Strangulation (OCGA 16-5-21) for committing an assault with the intent to cause serious injury by strangulation. Sy’Rique had the pre-meditated intentions to willingly and physically assault [REDACTED BY AGENCY] by placing her in a chokehold, depriving her of air, then forcibly taking her to he ground which could lead to death if not stopped. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] did not have an opportunity to defend her self nor was she able to escape his grasp until he had to let go. I informed both supervisors, Cpl. Lawrence and Sgt. Weldon of the incident. I transported Sy’Rique to the Houston County Detention Center, where he was accepted for booking and processing.
