On September 18, 2024
, at approximately 0800 hours, I Dep. N. Benefield was on duty with Houston County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer Division at my assigned school Northside High School (NHS). I responded to a Centegix alert in reference to students that have been fighting.
INFORMATION:
When I arrived I saw both students Sailyn Palmer and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] had been separated by staff. I walked [REDACTED BY AGENCY] to the main office to speak with her about what happened. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated that Sailyn had taken her friend’s water bottle and so she grabbed Sailyn’s book bag to try and stop her. She said that Sailyn then took her book bag off and walked away. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] said that she and Sailyn are friends so she picked up her book bag and kept it with her. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] said that she was walking to class when Sailyn saw her and grabbed her back pack to try and get it back. At the same time she grabbed the water bottle to try and get it from Sailyn. She said that Sailyn pushed her and she hit Sailyn and they started to fight.
I then went to speak with Sailyn about what happened and she told me that she had been trying to get her jacket back from another student and the other student would not give it back. Sailyn said she took the other students’ water bottle and [REDACTED BY AGENCY] did not like that so she grabbed her by the book bag to try and get it back and she dropped her book bag and walked away with the water bottle. Sailyn said she was going back to get her book bag and she saw that [REDACTED BY AGENCY] had her book bag so she grabbed the book bag and tried to take it away from [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. At the same time [REDACTED BY AGENCY] grabbed the water bottle and tried to take the water bottle out of her hand. She said at that time [REDACTED BY AGENCY] hit her and they started to fight.
After speaking with both of them I watched a school video and you see [REDACTED BY AGENCY] and her friend walking up the hallway and at that time Sailyn comes around the corner in the same area. Sailyn see’s [REDACTED BY AGENCY] with her book bag and she grabs the book bag and tries to pull it off [REDACTED BY AGENCY]. At the same time [REDACTED BY AGENCY] grabs the water bottle that Sailyn has and tries to take it from her. They began to tussle over both objects. Sailyn pushes [REDACTED BY AGENCY] back into the wall and then [REDACTED BY AGENCY] hits Sailyn in the face and they begin to fight. It was school staff members standing right there the entire time this altercation is happening. The school staff was able to separate them and that’s when myself and other school staff arrived to take them to the office.
I charged both with affray due to the altercation. I wrote [REDACTED BY AGENCY] a citation because she is a juvenile and released her to her parents. I took Sailyn in custody due to her being 18 and transported her to the Houston County Jail.
