HALL COUNTY, Ga. – A man with a lengthy criminal history, and a name that could be lifted from a cartoon, is facing new charges after authorities say he stole thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from Walmart stores throughout North Georgia.
40-year-old Speedy Gonzalez was arrested in March by Gainesville police after being identified on surveillance footage at the Walmart on Shallowford Road. Gonzalez is believed to be responsible for more than 20 thefts across multiple counties, including Hall, Barrow, Gwinnett, Habersham, White, and Lumpkin, with stolen goods valued at over $20,000.
Investigators say Gonzalez employed a tactic where he concealed smaller, high-value items such as nicotine packs, diabetic test kits, and gum inside larger items like trash cans or mailboxes. At checkout, he paid only for the bulky, outer items and walked out of the store with the hidden goods.
Police apprehended Gonzalez when he returned to the same Gainesville Walmart 10 days later. Authorities found additional stolen merchandise in his vehicle, leading them to connect him to similar thefts at other Walmart locations in the area.
This isn't Gonzalez’s first brush with the law. In 2020, he was arrested in Gwinnett County for stealing checks from a mailbox in Suwanee and attempting to cash them at a local Home Depot.
After his latest arrest, Gonzalez was booked into Hall County Jail but is currently being held in Barrow County while law enforcement investigates possible further charges.
