TOOMBS COUNTY, Ga. — A mother and her boyfriend have been charged in the death of 4-year-old Reese Hughes, who was found unresponsive Friday night in Lyons, Georgia.

Taylor Marie Hughes, 29, and Seth Hunter Brown, 26, were arrested and charged with felony murder, malice murder, first-degree child cruelty, and aggravated battery, following a joint investigation by the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI).

Deputies responded to a 911 call at around 7:46 p.m. Friday from Hughes, who told authorities she was driving her unresponsive daughter to the hospital. Emergency responders intercepted her vehicle at a gas station in Lyons, where paramedics attempted life-saving efforts before rushing the child to Memorial Health Meadows Hospital in Vidalia. Reese was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigators confirmed that Brown is Hughes’ boyfriend and that Reese was her biological daughter. Following their arrests, both were booked into the Toombs County Detention Center.

During a court appearance on March 17, the charges were formally presented to the suspects. No bond has been set, though one may be requested once legal counsel is appointed.

Sheriff Jordan Kight expressed his condolences, saying, “My heart goes out to the family during this incredibly painful time. Please continue to keep them in your prayers.”

District Attorney Tripp Fitzner also addressed the tragedy in a public statement, calling the case “heart-wrenching” and urging the community to allow the legal process to unfold. “Please trust the process and pray for all of those affected,” he wrote.

In response to the tragedy, the local community has shown an outpouring of support. Liberty Baptist Church, where the Hughes family attends, released a message of thanks and invited the public to a prayer vigil scheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear pink—Reese’s favorite color. Pink ribbons have also been placed throughout the area as a memorial.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of Reese Hughes' death. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office at (912) 526-9292.
