BIBB COUNTY, Ga. – A Macon man who used a firearm during a series of bank robberies in 2022, resulting in stolen funds and emotional distress for the victims, has been sentenced to prison.

Felix Cordes, 58, was sentenced to 97 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release, and ordered to pay restitution of $38,274 by U.S. District Judge Marc Treadwell on April 2. Cordes had previously pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery on January 2. Since this is a federal case, there is no possibility of parole.

“Bank robberies that spread fear throughout our community will lead to serious consequences,” said Acting U.S. Attorney C. Shanelle Booker. “We are committed to working with law enforcement to ensure dangerous criminals face justice.”

Cordes' crime spree began on April 2, 2022, when he robbed the MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union in Macon. Disguised in overalls, a bandana, and sunglasses, he brandished a handgun, demanded money from the tellers, and stole cash from two drawers before fleeing. Some of the tellers suffered panic attacks as a result of the threat. Cordes later used part of the stolen money to buy two cell phones at a Boost Mobile store.

A month later, on May 2, Cordes, assisted by an accomplice, robbed the Central Georgia Regional Credit Union in Macon, using a firearm and stealing more cash. On May 24, Cordes attempted a third robbery at another MidSouth Community Federal Credit Union, but the bank staff noticed the two masked men approaching with a handgun and managed to lock down the building, preventing the crime. No money was stolen in the attempt.

Following a search of Cordes' residence on April 6, 2022, investigators found evidence linking him to the robberies, including the bandana he wore during the first robbery, latex gloves like those used in the second, boxes for the cell phones bought with the stolen money, and ammunition for the firearm.

Cordes stole a total of $38,274 from the two credit unions during his crime spree.

“Cordes instilled fear in innocent people, and we are thankful that no one was physically harmed during these robberies,” said Paul Brown, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Atlanta. “We are relieved that he is off the streets and is receiving the justice he deserves.”

Bibb County Sheriff David Davis added, “Cordes was a dangerous criminal who put lives at risk, and thanks to the hard work of investigators, justice has been served. He will now face the consequences of his actions.”

The case was investigated by the FBI and the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joy Odom prosecuted the case for the Government.
