CHATHAM COUNTY, Ga. – A flight headed to Miami was forced to return to Savannah Monday night after a passenger attacked multiple flight attendants, kicked a seat, and swallowed rosary beads mid-flight, according to federal court documents.
The disturbance occurred aboard American Eagle Flight 4162, operated by Envoy Air, which was carrying eight passengers and five crew members. Shortly after takeoff, the passenger—identified as Delange Augustin—began exhibiting seizure-like behavior, including stomping, yelling incoherently, and shaking, court records show.
When a flight attendant approached to assist, Augustin reportedly kicked the crew member in the chest, launching them across the aisle into a window. The impact left the attendant in pain and struggling to breathe. Augustin then turned his aggression to the seat in front of him, kicking and punching until its back collapsed after the passenger fled.
Flight crew alerted the pilots, who quickly decided to return to Savannah. As the plane descended, Augustin initially calmed down after learning they were turning around. But just before the cabin door opened, he allegedly rushed the front of the plane and attacked a second flight attendant. Three passengers restrained him until law enforcement arrived.
Augustin was taken to a hospital for evaluation after reportedly ingesting rosary beads, then booked into the Chatham County Detention Center.
According to an FBI affidavit filed Tuesday, Augustin’s sister told investigators that before the attack, he warned her to “close her eyes and pray,” saying “Satan’s disciples had followed them onto the plane.” The pair had been traveling to Haiti, reportedly fleeing “religious attacks of a spiritual nature.” She said the rosary beads were considered a “weapon of strength in spiritual warfare,” and insisted her brother had no known medical or mental health issues.
Augustin now faces federal charges for interfering with a flight crew, along with state charges including misdemeanor battery, obstruction of police, and felony property damage.
American Airlines, parent company of Envoy Air, confirmed the incident in a statement: “On March 10, American Eagle Flight 4162, operated by Envoy, with service from Savannah (SAV) to Miami (MIA), returned to SAV due to a disruptive passenger. Safety and security are our top priorities. We appreciate the professionalism of the entire crew and thank our passengers for their understanding.”
No attorney was listed for Augustin in federal court records.
