DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – A DeKalb County family is suing a local daycare for gross negligence after their 9-month-old baby suffered second-degree burns when a worker allegedly placed him in scalding water for over three minutes.
The incident occurred at Young Mindz Learning Academy, where the infant’s mother says her child endured a long and painful recovery process following the severe burns.
Surveillance footage obtained by Channel 2 Action News shows the daycare employee forcibly removing the child's clothing after an accident, then placing him into a sink filled with hot water. The video captures the child in clear distress, though the employee appears not to realize the severity until after removing him from the sink. She is then seen panicking and running through the facility for more than 15 minutes without providing proper care for the baby’s injuries.
According to the lawsuit, the employee violated the daycare’s policy, which prohibits bathing children and instead requires the use of wet wipes for cleaning purposes.
The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning launched a three-month investigation into the incident. Investigators concluded that the employee’s actions posed a serious risk to the child’s health and safety. The daycare was also cited for failing to meet supervision standards, including a rule that mandates separate care areas for children under three years old.
The owner of Young Mindz Learning Academy declined to comment on the lawsuit.
Since the incident, the daycare has made corrections and currently meets state compliance standards, according to recent inspection reports.
The employee involved was arrested and charged with cruelty to children. She was later sentenced to probation.
