ATLANTA, Ga. – On Monday, March 17, 2025, Atlanta rap icon Pastor Troy visited Morris Brown College to deliver a guest lecture as part of the school’s “Exploration of Hip-Hop Lyrics” course. The Grammy-nominated artist, known for his 2002 hit “Are We Cuttin’,” spoke to students about the deep roots and cultural influence of hip-hop, particularly Atlanta’s role in shaping the genre.
Born Micha LeVar Troy in Augusta, Georgia, Pastor Troy has had a wide-ranging career as a rapper, composer, and actor. His music has appeared in films like Down 2 Come Up, Malibu’s Most Wanted, and xXx, and he’s also made appearances in music videos and on the wrestling-themed TV series Battle Slam: Vendetta.
During his lecture, Troy shared personal stories from his journey in the music industry and offered insight into his creative process. He also discussed Atlanta's evolution as a hip-hop powerhouse and the power of lyrics in conveying authentic life experiences.
The course, which is open to music majors and non-majors alike, invites students to study the artistry behind hip-hop lyrics and the social and cultural forces that shape them. Pastor Troy highlighted his song “Vica Versa” as a focal point of the class discussion, exploring its meaning and lyrical complexity.
“Dope day at Morris Brown College, showing love to the Music Program,” Troy wrote on Instagram after the event. “Great questions from the students. The class is about the thought process behind the lyrics, and Vica Versa was our project for today. Felt good to give back to an ATL HBCU with so much history.”
Morris Brown College President Dr. Kevin James praised the event, noting the value of experiential learning and culturally relevant programming in the school’s revitalized curriculum.
Morris Brown has seen a significant resurgence in recent years, growing from just 20 students in 2019 to over 430 today. After overcoming accreditation challenges, the school continues to thrive. Founded in 1881, it remains the first college in Georgia to be owned and operated entirely by African Americans.
