HALL COUNTY, Ga. – A man accused of posing as a football recruiter has been arrested for allegedly scamming high school athletes and their families out of thousands of dollars, according to Gainesville police.
Authorities say 39-year-old Malcolm Walker was taken into custody in Gwinnett County and booked into the Hall County Jail on charges of theft by deception. Investigators claim Walker falsely promised families that he could connect student-athletes with college coaches and recruiters, collecting payments for travel and recruitment-related expenses that were never fulfilled.
“He talks the talk, but unfortunately, that’s all he’s got going for him,” said First Lt. Kevin Holbrook of the Gainesville Police Department. “He’s just stealing these people’s money and leaving them with absolutely nothing.”
The case came to light after Phyllip Becoats filed a police report, alleging Walker defrauded him out of more than $1,000. Becoats had initially hired Walker to produce a highlight reel for Gainesville High School senior B.J. Bailey. Later, Walker claimed he had secured interest from the University of Colorado and requested payment for airfare, hotel accommodations, and game tickets. Becoats paid Walker $1,023—but the trip never happened.
Walker allegedly stalled for months, citing various excuses and failing to deliver on his promises. When pressed for a refund, he assured Becoats he would repay the money within five days. Weeks passed with no response, prompting Becoats to contact authorities.
Investigators say banking records and other evidence show Walker never intended to arrange the trip. Since his arrest, Gainesville police have been contacted by multiple other law enforcement agencies across Georgia reporting similar cases.
“We’ve been notified by multiple law enforcement agencies, multiple individuals who have said, ‘Hey, that’s the same guy who did this to us,’” Holbrook said.
Authorities believe Walker has scammed families out of tens of thousands of dollars statewide. They are urging anyone who may have been affected to come forward and contact their local law enforcement agency.
Despite the incident, Becoats continued to support Bailey’s recruitment journey. The student-athlete has since earned a full scholarship to play football at Maryville College in Tennessee.
District officials hope Walker is held accountable and that victims will be able to recover their losses. “We can work with other agencies and the GBI to tie all these cases together,” Holbrook added. “That way, we can make sure he remains in custody and some of these families get justice.”
Walker has not responded to official inquiries, but he did issue a vague denial in a social media post following his arrest, blaming unmet expectations on circumstances beyond his control. However, he did not address the missing funds or whether he intends to issue refunds.
