BARROW COUNTY, Ga. – The defense team for Colt Gray, the teenager charged in connection with the deadly shooting at Apalachee High School, has filed a motion requesting that his trial be moved out of Barrow County. The attorneys argue that the extensive media coverage surrounding the case has unfairly influenced the local jury pool, making it difficult to ensure a fair trial.
Gray faces 55 charges, including multiple counts of murder, aggravated assault, and cruelty to children, after the September 4 shooting in the school’s J hall. The attack resulted in the deaths of two teachers, Richard Aspinwall, 39, and Cristina Irimie, 53, as well as two 14-year-old students, Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo. Nine others were also injured.
Investigators say Gray used a semi-automatic AR-15-style rifle during the shooting. Authorities later found a notebook with drawings resembling the shooting and a checklist detailing steps leading up to the event. They also discovered newspaper clippings and photos related to previous school shootings at his home.
In a motion filed this week in Barrow County Superior Court, Gray’s defense attorneys claimed that the intense media attention and public reaction surrounding the case have compromised their client’s ability to receive a fair trial.
“The extensive publicity has biased the Barrow County jury pool against Gray,” the motion reads. “Transferring the case to another jurisdiction would help ensure a more impartial jury and potentially reduce the resources required to find one locally.”
Gray’s father, Colin Gray, who is also facing charges—including second-degree murder—for allegedly providing his son with access to the firearm, filed a similar motion last month. Investigators say Colin Gray knew the weapon was missing on the day of the shooting and showed little immediate reaction upon learning of the incident.
Prosecutors have not yet responded to the defense’s request for a change of venue.
