On August 19, 2024. I, Deputy Sheriff Gruber, responded to [1600 BLOCK] Welcome to Sargent Rd. in reference to a dispute. Upon my arrival on scene. I noticed mud tire marks coming onto the roadway leading from a perpendicular angle leaving the driveway. I also noticed a mailbox that appeared to have been run over. It was also at this time that I made contact with the caller, [REDACTED BY AGENCY].
[REDACTED BY AGENCY] told me that Jennifer Screws came to his house and began banging on the door. He stated that when he opened the door she began accusing him of stealing her belongings and started searching his house. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] told me that when she started arguing with him about items that were stolen from her that she was looking for, he demanded that she leave his house. It was after the argument in the house that it transitioned outside where she got in her brother’s red Ram truck. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] then stated she had made a comment about his dead mother and stated that if she got back out of the truck that he was going to beat her as and that she needed to leave. This is when stated Jennifer drove towards him after first backing up and accelerating towards him. [REDACTED BY AGENCY] stated he thought she was going to hit him and had to jump out of the way. When [REDACTED BY AGENCY] jumped out of the way he stated that Jennifer backed up and accelerated towards him again and had to jump out of the way once more and she veered off and struck his mailbox and running over the mailbox. It was after receiving this information that I was able to have Deputy McCusker and Deputy Gregg identify the vehicle with the suspected tag number of [REDACTED] and located the suspect. Deputy McCusker was able to take Jennifer Screws into custody and admitted to being over at [REDACTED BY AGENCY]’s house. Deputy McCusker and Deputy Gregg will be doing supplemental reports with their interactions with Jennifer as well and pictures were taken of the vehicle that indicated that the vehicle had run something over. Lt. K. Addis arrived on my scene and was able to confirm through his accident reconstruction abilities by observing the tire marks that confirmed what [REDACTED BY AGENCY] was telling us that she attempted to drive towards him twice and had ample ability to leave the property if she was attempting to flee from [REDACTED BY AGENCY] Lt. K. Addis will also be making a supplemental report in regards to his findings. After Deputy McCusker transported Jennifer to the jail, I was able to speak with her after reading her Miranda Warning and agreeing to speak with me in the booking fingerprint room at the Coweta County Jail. Jennifer told me that she had went over to [REDACTED BY AGENCY]’s house to look for a [REDACTED] subject that I am not familiar with. Jennifer told me that the argument started over looking for the belongings in his house that were stolen from her and he began to tell her to leave. Jennifer told me that she had heard a “Click Click” sound and thought [REDACTED BY AGENCY] had a gun, but never saw a firearm in [REDACTED BY AGENCY]’s possession (It should be noted I was provided this information earlier by Deputy McCusker and after asking [REDACTED BY AGENCY] if he had a gun, he stated that he did not and that he was a convicted felon, that we were free to search his home as well). Jennifer stated that while she was backing out of the drive way, [REDACTED BY AGENCY] continued towards her and yelling at her. Jennifer stated that she continued to argue back with him and made the statement that [REDACTED BY AGENCY] told me about. Jennifer made the statement towards [REDACTED BY AGENCY] about calling his mom a he. Jennifer also stated that she “blacked out” while trying to leave. I asked Jennifer if she had just tried to drive towards him to scare him and she agreed with me that she did so. I informed Jennifer that the tire marks in the driveway indicated this occurred and that she then tried to drive towards him again after he jumped out of the way, a second time and struck the mailbox. Jennifer admitted to hitting the mailbox and stated hitting the mailbox was unintentional.
It should be noted that while interviewing her she brought up drug usage. I asked her what her preferred narcotic of choice was and she stated that it was meth. I asked when the last time she used and she stated today at around 7 o’clock. This would indicate that this occurred on 8/18/2024. At 1900 hours.
I had informed Jennifer that she had optimal ability to leave after backing out the first time. She told me that she couldn’t as she had driven into a culvert. This statement did not match the tire marks that were on scene that indicated that she backed half way out of the driveway and the accelerated forwards turning left going back towards where [REDACTED BY AGENCY] was standing. After missing [REDACTED BY AGENCY] the tire marks indicated that she backed up at an angle and accelerated through the edge of the driveway, striking the mailbox in the front yard that was approximately 10 feet off the roadway completely running it over with her tire bending it in flat V shape. This is also near where [REDACTED BY AGENCY] was standing after he jumped out of the way the first time.
After receiving this information and providing Jennifer with the facts of the case I informed her she was being charged with Aggravated Assault, Criminal Trespass, and Criminal Trespass with damages.
While working on her paperwork, Jennifer was in the holding cell in the Coweta County Jail when she yelled from the doorway after speaking with other inmates, “you know i wanna change my statement, i did try to run that crackhead over”. Myself and jail staff heard this, I promptly went to the jail supervision and had this recorded and will be attached to this case file.
[REDACTED BY AGENCY] also wrote and official statement that will be attached to this case file as well.
