On 02/13/2024
around 2116 hours, while working uniformed patrol in a marked unit, I Officer Kite, responded to a traffic accident at the intersection of Abercorn Street and E 52nd Street.
While en route to the location, dispatch advised that the traffic collision occurred between a motorcycle and a pick up truck.
Once on scene, I noticed the driver of unit 2, Mr. [VICTIM ], laying on the ground just north of his motorcycle bleeding from his head and unresponsive. There was a male with who had placed a blue rag over Mr. [VICTIM ]’s head. A lady then approached me and identified herself as a doctor and began CPR until EMS arrived on scene to treat Mr. [VICTIM ]. I was unable to obtain a statement from Mr. [VICTIM ] due to his injuries. Chatham County Emergency Medical services arrived and transported to Memorial Medical Center. I was notified later on in the investigation from the Officer who followed EMS to the hospital that Mr. [VICTIM ] died as a result of his injuries from this crash.
I then spoke with the driver of unit 1, Mr. Reggie Singleton, who stated that he was driving east on E 52nd Street and he noticed the motorcycle rider going about one hundred miles per hour south on Abercorn Street. I did not question Mr. Singleton further due to the rapidly evolving scene. I advised Mr. Singleton to stand off on the side of the road and wait for Traffic Investigations Unit to speak with him and the other two parties that were in his vehicle with him. Damage to Mr. Singleton’s vehicle consisted of major disableing damage to the driver side front door. The front window was also busted.
A tow truck was requested to come to the scene and remove both vehicles involved and Sammi’s Towing responded.
My on duty Lieutenant, Sergeant, Captain, and Traffic Investigation Unit responded.
It should be noted that both driver’s have been listed as the “At Fault” party due to the severity of the crash.
TIU requested that both vehicles be held for their investigation.
My department body worn camera was active.
Investigator Supplemental:
I’ve added roadway contributing factors as well as vehicle contributing factors ie tint. Mr. Singleton’s vehicle window tint was tested and displayed 19% with the legal limit being 32% (+/- 3%). Abercorn is lined with large oak trees, that obstruct the line of sight coming off side streets. The stop bar on E 52nd St is 16.41 feet back from the edge of Abercorn St. From February 13th, 2019 to February 13th, 2024
there has been 45 accidents at this location.
Mr. Singleton is found to be at fault and is charged with 40-6-393 (B) Vehicle Homicide 2nd Degree and 40-6-72 failure to yield after stopping at stop sign.
