On 07/23/2024
SPD downtown officers were dispatched to an armed robbery call at McDonalds at 236 W Broughton St. The call originated from the phone number: [REDACTED BY AGENCY]
I had been patrolling in Yamacraw Village. I advised dispatch that the this location was a common “hoax” robbery call. Dispatch looked further into the matter and advised that the call originated from a location close to Zubly St and Fahm St which is in Yamacraw Village and nowhere near McDonalds at 236 W Broughton St.
I know from my training knowledge and experience that serious crime like this armed robbery are often false reported to get officers out of an area so that illicit activity/business can be done in that area. I had personal knowledge of Edward Wright had made false reports like this one in the past (see CRN 220926086).
I canvassed the area and located Wright inside Yamacraw Village close to the area where the call originated from. He was holding a black cell phone in his hand. I also had personal knowledge that Wright was banned from Yamacraw village in 2018 (see CRN 180926086). He has been arrested for trespassing in Yamacraw Village several times.
Wright was arrested for trespassing in Yamacraw Village and read his Miranda rights. He was then asked why he made “the call”. Wright admitted the he called in the armed robbery and stated that he did at the request of one of the “dope boys”. He made the call so that the “dope boy” could make two transactions. In exchange Wright was supposed to get a rock of crack cocaine.
Wright confirmed that he made the call from his “911 only” phone that was in his hand at the time of his arrest. Ofc Moran advised dispatch over the records channel that she would be calling in to 911 with Wrights phone. Dispatch confirmed that Wrights phone matched he number that false reported the armed Robbery of [REDACTED BY AGENCY]
Wright was then charged with the false report of a crime. Wright was ed incident arrest and was found to be in possession of a crack pipe. He was subsequently charged with possession of drug related objects. It was then discovered that Wright had two active warrant through the Chatham County Sheriffs office. These warrants were confirmed via dispatch.
Wright was transported and booked into CCDC without incident. The evidence from this case was photographed and uploaded to evidence.com. It was then transported to the Savannah PD Property room.
Wright reported that the “dope boy” was named “[REDACTED]” and he lived at [200 BLOCK] Yamacraw Village. He was a black male “Muslim brother” with a bald head in his late 30s early 40s. He said that he usually drove a blue car that he parked behind [200 BLOCK] Yamacraw Village.
