While patrolling the Newport Subdivision, Port Wentworth, Chatham County, Georgia, I was preparing to leave the neighborhood by traveling north on Newport Blvd from the apartment area. As I approached the 4 way stop sign I could hear a commotion. I was driving with my windows down at the time. I looked to my left and in front of [SINGLE DIGIT BLOCK] Stemson Way I observed a large group of people. They appeared to be actively fighting. I was unsure from the distance if it was serious or “play fighting” amongst Juveniles. I then hear somebody yell something to the effect of “YALL STOP THERE GO THE COPS!!”. I also observed a couple of subjects attempting to pull the smaller females apart. I notified dispatch of a fight in progress and the location.
I then turned my vehicle to the left and other vehicles had stopped in the roadway in front of me. I activated my emergency lights and drove on the wrong side of the roadway a few feet from the altercation. I then exited my vehicle and began to yell STOP! I also could hear the parties attempting to pull them apart tell them to stop and the police were here.
The group then fell to the ground as I was approaching. The female in the blue wig (CAMRYN Coleman) had now rolled on top of KALEAH Early (Blue wig). She then began to throw several closed fist punches downward as KALEAH was on her back. I then began to spray parties involved with my department issued OC Spray to stop the active physical assault taking place. I began with CAMRYN, then KALEAH as she was still actively trying to fight as well. The spray would become effective, and CAMRYN would move to the side. At this time SHANIA was also attempting to strike KALEAH. SHANIA Coleman then attempted to get into the altercation again and strike KALEAH. I then delivered a spray to her face as well.
The OC Spray was affective, and parties began to listen to verbal commands and stopped attempting to strike one another. I pushed KALEAH back to the ground as she attempted to stand up. I began to give them verbal commands to lay on their stomachs to which KALEAH and CAMRYN complied. I then called out to the female in the white shirt to come lay down as well (Shania). She complied and lay on the ground next to the other subjects. I then told [WITNESS ] and WITNESS to go to the other side of the road. The male subject [WITNESS ] who was attempting to break up the parties was also hit with overspray while I was attempting to spray CAMRYN. He retreated into his residence. He would later be given a description of how to alleviate the OC Spray.
I then placed CAMRYN and KALEAH in handcuffs, checked for fit, and double locked. SHANIA was given verbal commands to remain on the ground to which she complied.
Once additional units had responded all parties were secured in separate police vehicles. I returned to each party and read them their Miranda Rights. I began with KALEAH. She agreed to speak to me. She advised she was walking from work (Burger King). She stated that the mother and grandmother began to approach her and question her. She then stated it was a situation about a boy. She stated that they just jumped her. She also stated that they were walking up on her aggressively and she asked them not to. She stated she put her stuff on the ground because she thought it was going to escalate. When asked later about climbing into the window she stated her boyfriend, [REDACTED], lives here.
I then spoke with the mother of two of the subjects, [WITNESS ]. She stated that KALEAH has been climbing in and out of her window to her residence. She stated she was doing that to see a boy. The grandmother, [WITNESS ], also stated that they have caught her before too. When they attempted to tell her to not come to the residence anymore KALEAH walked up to them as if she wanted to fight.
I then spoke with CAMRYN COLEMAN. She was read her rights and agreed to speak to me. She stated that they were speaking with KALEAH about breaking into the house. She stated that she had come into their house before without permission. They saw her walking and her mother attempted to speak to her about going into their residence. She stated they did it in a non-aggressive way. She then stated when she saw her, she (Kaleah) began to state “WASSUP CAMRYN WASSUP”. She stated that Kaleah threw the first punch, and the parties began to fight. She also stated that the mother, grandmother, and [WITNESS ] were just attempting to break up the fight. She admitted that she, her sister, and Kaleah were the three parties involved in the fight.
SHANIA was also advised of her rights. She agreed to speak to me. She stated that Kaleah was walking by with her boyfriend. They split up and he walked in an unknown direction. As they walked by the residence the mother and grandmother attempted to talk to her. She then became aggressive when she saw CAMRYN. Kaleah began to ask her “wasn’t it on sight?” meaning that the two had exchanged words and an agreement to fight on sight. Shania did not like that Kaleah was saying that to Camryn. She told her that she was not going to do that. The three then began to fight. She also stated that Kaleah threw the first strike.
Based on the information given, all parties engaged in activity which caused a disturbance of the public tranquility in a violent or tumultuous manner. Camryn and Shania were charged with Affray and Disorderly Conduct. Kaleah was charged with affray, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana less than 1 oz, and possession of a drug related object. Prior to being transported Kaleah’s property was ed. She also made verbal admission to Cpl Ojeda that she had a small amount of marijuana in her purse. I also located a grinder in her purse.
Ofc Persse transported Camryn and Shania to Memorial Medical Center for medical clearance and then to CCDC without incident. CPL Ojeda transported Kaleah to Memorial Medical Center for medical clearance and then to CCDC without incident.
The evidence collected from Kaleah was logged into the Port Wentworth Police Department evidence drop box according to policy.
LT Green was notified and responded to the scene due to the Use of force (Response to aggression)
