On the date of 10/05/2024
, around the hours of 0325 I, Sgt. Cheatwood 66, was patrolling the area of North Park Street near the business of Dollar General (1003 North Park Street) as it was burglarized around this time period twenty-four hours prior. While looking at the business prior to turning in, I observed what appeared to be a male on the rear or the building. I would hit my brakes and begin to slow down to check the business. I had learned earlier in the day that the business has recently been burglarized where a back door was left open and a multiple people would go in with tools and make there way inside another door, stealing multiple items throughout the late night.
I called out to dispatch my intent to get out at the business after observing the suspicious behavior. I would see a flash of white that I had just seen run into the wood line. I pulled to the rear of the business of the door that had been previously forced open and entered. I didn’t not see that it had been tampered with, so I began walking along the rear and looking into the wood line. I could hear munching in the leaves as if someone was walking or potentially fleeing, but due to surrounding noise, I couldn’t pinpoint the location. I believed that the sound was going towards Highway 27. I began walk that direction as I asked for assistance from a nearby officer. I occasionally would hear the noise again and knew what I had observed and knew a potential suspect to be fleeing. I called out commands to “stop” and “show yourself” on several occasions.
I began ing the Woodline to for the male and observed used foot trail that led back towards the Grace Covenant Church on Rome Street (1124 Rome Street). I began to follow that trail to where it led into the open area outside the back of the church. Just along the grass line, I could observe one set of footprints in the dew that had fallen throughout the night. I began to follow the prints and called out that I had saw to other officers. As I continued walking the prints disappeared as if the suspect had stepped off the grass and walked along the parking lot. I then began to walk the edge line of a wood area that was thick was kudzu. I used my light to the area that was filled with green kudzu and dark brown dying kudzu. While walking, I observed a black spot that stood out in the thick brush. I began to I’ve commands, and I observed a white male wearing a white shirt as I had observed flee from the area earlier.
I began to give commands to the suspect to crawl out of the thick brush as I could see his hands were empty clearly. The male complied and crawled out to me saying he was just scared. Once out, I was able place the male in handcuffs without further complications. I quickly explained to the male that he was out at a closed business well after hours that had just recently been broken into and he should have stopped when commanded. The male, alter identified as Patrick Patterson, continued to state that he was just scared. While ing Patterson, I located a “push rod” commonly used to assist in the ingestion of narcotics. I then ed the opposite pocket to locate a large open pocketknife that nearly cut me as I reached inside.
I leaned Patterson over and Ofc. Kelly helped me get Patterson to his feet. Ofc. Kelly read Patterson his Miranda Rights as I stood nearby. When questioned, Patterson stated that he was just walking through the area, but knew it was closed. Patterson initially denied knowing anything about the business being entered hours earlier. When questioned about fleeing, Patterson explained he was scared of the officers, yet officers had just assisted him recently in a positive nature. I would then question Patterson about narcotics he had possibly thrown while fleeing which is common behavior. Patterson explained that he did not, and that he only possessed a “pipe”.
K9 Olivia and Cpl. Moore responded and began a track of the location in which he has just traveled. Deep in the brush, K9 Olivia was able to locate a blue container that had cash and a white rocklike substance inside. This substance was identified as crack cocaine. I then began questioning Patterson again, who admitted that he fled and attempted to hide the crack cocaine that he had recently purchased from Fox Fire drive. This evidence was later collected as item 266A and dropped into evidence locker 006.
Patterson was then transported to the Carroll County Jail and turned over to jail staff. Warrants were typed and awaiting signature by a judge.
