On Tuesday July 9th, 2024
at approximately 0854 hours I was dispatched to 10 N Public Sq. in reference to a fight in progress. While en route I received further information from dispatch, that the suspect had attempted to kidnap the victim. The suspect was in a gray Nissan Sentra displaying Florida tag [REDACTED]. Captain Bentley attempted to stop the vehicle and the suspect fled from him.
I met with the victim identified as Mr. [VICTIM ]. Mr. [VICTIM ] stated he had met the suspect Mr. Malcolm Purdue in December 2023 in the Cobb County jail. Mr. [VICTIM ] had made friends with Mr. Purdue, and was bonded out of Cobb County jail by Mr. Purdue’s wife, and stayed with Mr. Purdue in Atlanta. Mr. [VICTIM ] stated that he had court today at the Bartow County Courthouse, but was unsure of the address , and that’s why he was at City Court.
Mr. [VICTIM ] stated that Mr. Purdue and his wife had been arguing a lot lately, and that Mr. Purdue was cheating on his wife. Mr. [VICTIM ] informed Mr. Purdue’s wife about the cheating, and that is why the incident occurred today. Mr. Purdue had a friend bring Mr. [VICTIM ] to court, and had apparently followed them to the court house parking lot. When Mr. [VICTIM ] stepped out of the vehicle, Mr. Purdue attempted to force Mr. [VICTIM ] into his vehicle against his will. Mr. Purdue then began to strangle Mr. [VICTIM ] causing him to not be able to breathe. Mr. Purdue threw Mr. [VICTIM ] to the ground causing abrasions to his knee and back. Mr. Purdue also snatched Mr. [VICTIM ] phone from him and was going to steal it but officers arrived on scene, and Mr. Purdue threw the phone causing it to break, and began to flee from Captain Bentley. Captain Bentley was in a marked patrol vehicle with lights and sirens.
Mr. Purdue was located on I-75 Southbound by Emerson P.D, and began to flee from them until they got to Cobb County where Mr. Purdue was pitted by Cobb County P.D. and overturned his vehicle, and was apprehended.
Cartersville CID was able to obtain surveillance footage from Cartersville City Hall of the incident that occurred in the parking lot. Warrants have been obtained for Mr. Purdue by Investigator Gray, and the scene was turned over to CID.
Pictures of Mr. [VICTIM ] injuries were also captured on my department issued BWC.
