On Thursday, September 12, 2024, at approximately 11:35 p.m., I responded to an assist agency call at the Gordy Hall dormitory at the Reinhardt University campus at 550 Alumni Circle, Waleska, Georgia, 30183. While en route, dispatch advised the Reinhardt Police Department requested assistance regarding illegal drugs and a weapon found during a room search.
I met with a Resident Advisor (RA) at the front entrance to the Gordy Hall dormitory who escorted me inside. As I walked inside, I observed four males sitting in the common room with two other RA’s. I was escorted to the top floor where multiple RA’s were searching the room in question. I was advised the odor of marijuana emanated from one of the rooms which prompted a search of the room by RA’s on campus. I entered the room and met with Officer Shaw of the Reinhardt Police Department. In one of the bedrooms, Officer Shaw had cleared a .45 caliber ZIG M1911 handgun with a loaded magazine that was placed on top of a student’s bed. Officer Shaw advised one of the RA’s had overheard one of the students instruct a student to grab a backpack and bring it downstairs where the occupants of the dorm room were waiting for the search to be concluded. The backpack was intercepted by RA’s where the handgun was located.
I seized the handgun and loaded magazine and secured it in the back of my patrol vehicle. The handgun was placed in an evidence bag while wearing latex gloves. I returned inside where the four males were located. Officer Shaw advised the owner of the backpack, Ulysses Tomblin, admitted the handgun was his. Officer Shaw advised a small amount of marijuana and drug related objects were discovered by RA’s during the room search and she would not be charging Ulysses with the illegal drugs. Officer Shaw contacted her supervisor, Chief of Police, J. Duncan, who requested Ulysses be Criminally Trespass Warned from the university campus. Officer Shaw requested I verbally give Ulysses a Criminal Trespass Warning as well as have the warning be input into the Cherokee County P1 system.
Officer Shaw advised Ulysses he was under arrest for Carrying Weapons Within or on School Property (O.C.G.A. 16-11-127.1). Officer Shaw requested I transport Ulysses to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center due to her being the only officer in service at the university. I placed Ulysses in handcuffs, checked for fit, and double locked. Ulysses was escorted to the front of my patrol vehicle where I searched his person incident to arrest. Ulysses was secured in the back seat of my patrol vehicle.
I returned to speak with Officer Shaw and handed her the handgun in the evidence bag. Officer Shaw filled out a Warrants-to-be-Taken form and I transported Ulysses to the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center where I relinquished custody to deputies on site. Ulysses was booked for Carrying Weapons Within or on School Property (O.C.G.A. 16-11-127.1) and a Warrants-to-be-Taken from was handed to jail staff. I left the intake area and searched the back seat of my patrol vehicle for contraband. No contraband was discovered and I left the jail and returned in-service.
A Criminal Trespass Warning was input for Ulysses in the Premier One system.
