BARROW COUNTY, Ga. – A judge has granted a $500,000 bond for Colin Gray, the father of the alleged Apalachee High School shooter, following a motion filed by his attorneys earlier this month.

During the hearing, Gray testified while prosecutors and defense attorneys questioned him. Family members of the victims also spoke, urging the judge to deny bond.

Richard Aspinwall, father of slain math teacher Ricky Aspinwall, and Brianna Schermerhorn, mother of 14-year-old victim Mason Schermerhorn, shared their grief in court.

“I can tell you it’s been devastating for my family. I have two little girls who are growing up without a daddy,” Aspinwall said.

“At the end of the day, I want him buried under the prison and not allowed to have an impact on any other children,” Schermerhorn stated.

Chief Judge Primm explained his decision, emphasizing that he must follow the law, not emotion. He granted bond based on key factors: Gray is not considered a flight risk, does not pose a danger to the community, and is unlikely to commit additional felonies if released.

Gray must post at least $50,000 in cash to secure his release. Reports indicate his attorneys are working to obtain the funds.

His son, Colt Gray, faces 55 charges, including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and cruelty to children. Colin Gray has been charged with 29 crimes, including second-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to children, and involuntary manslaughter. Both have pleaded not guilty.

A grand jury indictment alleges that Colin Gray provided his son access to firearms and ammunition “after receiving sufficient warning that Colt Gray would endanger the bodily safety of another.”

His attorneys have filed a motion to dismiss the indictment, arguing that it “fails adequately to charge this defendant with any offense against the laws of the State of Georgia.” A ruling on that motion has not yet been made.

Court records show no upcoming hearings currently scheduled for Colt Gray.
