GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. – The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a fatal collision involving a Gwinnett County police officer’s vehicle that resulted in the death of a male pedestrian.

Shortly before 1:00 a.m., an officer from the West Precinct reported to dispatch that he had struck a pedestrian on Beaver Ruin Road near Interstate 85. According to officials, the officer was driving east when the pedestrian suddenly attempted to cross the roadway outside of a designated crosswalk.

Officers on the scene immediately rendered aid before Gwinnett County Fire Services paramedics transported the man to a nearby hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Due to the nature of the incident, the Georgia State Patrol, with assistance from the Gwinnett County Police Accident Investigation Unit, launched an investigation. The on-scene portion of the investigation has since concluded, and morning traffic was not impacted. However, authorities are continuing to review the case.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. Officials will release more details as the investigation progresses.
