On August 16, 2024
, I was dispatched to 2 Main St. Garden City, Chatham County, Ga of an accident that happened in the City Limits of Port Wentworth, Ga. When I arrived the Georgia Port Police had a vehicle stopped on their property. A off duty Port Officer while working off duty stated that the vehicle went through the construction zone where there was a construction worker directing traffic. The officer stated that the vehicle hit a stop sign, several barrels and cones. Several officers were able to get the vehicle stopped at the location.
I made with the driver of the vehicle Quinton Butterfield. Butterfield was very confrontational and irate. Butterfield started to explain that he was leaving Pooler and trying to go to the Highlands when he got lost. Butterfield did not make much since as he was in the Ports. When asked what happened Butterfield stated that there was no one directing traffic and that he just got lost. While speaking to Butterfield I could smell the odor of an acholic beverage coming from his person. I asked Butterfield for his license and he stated he did not have one on him. I then asked Butterfield how much he had to drink tonight, and he started noting. I then asked about the bottle of Hessey and 2 empty Heineken inside the vehicle in plan view. Butterfield then states that he buried his brother today and the bottles got thrown inside the vehicle.
I asked Butterfield if he would perform standard field sobriety testing to see if he was okay to drive, he stated he was not doing anything and to just arrest him. When arresting Butterfield I informed him I could smell the odor of alcoholic beverage coming from him he stated he had not been drinking like that. Butterfield was arrested for DUI less safe handcuffed tightened to fit, double locked, ed incident to arrest and placed in the rear of my patrol vehicle. While placing Butterfield inside my patrol vehicle he informed me that I didn’t not read him his rights and that I needed to read him a yellow card. He then became argumentative stating that before he got inside the vehicle, I needed to read him the green card right now.
Butterfield was read the Implied Consent Notice for Subjects 21 and over green card for his breath. Butterfield stated he did not have a choice, and I explained to him I needed a verbal yes or no. Butterfield then stated that I needed to tell him of what I read, and I explained to him that I could not give him legal advice and had to read the card as it is printed. Butterfield stated that he needed to see his lawyer and to shut the door. Butterfield did not give me a yes or no, so I notated it as a refusal.
Inside Butterfield’s vehicle I located 2 empty Heineken 12 fl.oz. in the front passenger floorboard and a 375ml open bottle of Hennessy in the rear passenger floorboard. Butterfield received citations for DUI less safe, DUI refusal, failure to maintain lane, Hit and Run duty of driver to return to the scene of an accident, license to be exhibited on demand, and open container. The Georgia Port Police completed the report for the accident report CRN: 24-051063 taken by Ofc. McKiney S. badge # 213.
Butterfield was taken to Chatham County Detention Center where he was released to staff. Butterfield received a bond of $2800.00. The vehicle was removed by Sapp’s Wrecker Service.
