On August 2nd, 2024
, at 10:35 hours, I responded to [500 BLOCK] West 54th Street (Magnolia Apartments) regarding a shooting.
Upon arrival, I located the victim, Mr. [VICTIM ], lying in the grass on the ground at the back of the complex near the leasing office. I observed a gunshot wound to the inner knee area of his left leg still openly bleeding. Mr. [VICTIM ] was alert and breathing. Officer I. Kite (5365) began to apply a tourniquet to his leg while I spoke with him.
Mr. [VICTIM ] stated he resides in unit #[REDACTED] in Magnolia Apartments and had been at the leasing office paying rent. After leaving the office he advised he was crossing the street and headed back towards his unit when he observed a gray Dodge Challenger-type vehicle recklessly speeding around the corner coming from [600 BLOCK] West 54th Street. He stated the vehicle had a black spoiler and what he believed to be a Florida registration.
Due to the reckless speed/maneuvering of the vehicle Mr. [VICTIM ] worried the car would strike a person or animal. He advised he yelled at the car “Slow the fu*k down!”. The vehicle came to a stop in the middle of the street and a male he described as the following exited the driver’s door:
Black male – skinny – medium-length dreadlocks – white t-shirt
He advised the male got out of the car and said something he could not understand. Mr. [VICTIM ] began to turn to walk away when the male then produced a white “AK-style” firearm with a black barrel and magazine and fired at him striking him in the leg. The male then immediately got back into the vehicle and drove eastbound towards Montgomery Street. I observed two shell casings in the middle of West 54th Street in the area Mr. [VICTIM ] had stated the suspect stopped his vehicle.
Fire and EMS transported Mr. [VICTIM ] to Memorial Medical Center.
While on scene I was notified additional property damage was located and an occupied structure had been struck by the gunfire as well. I responded to the leasing Officer where I met with employee Ms. [VICTIM ]. Ms. [VICTIM ] advised she was seated at her desk inside the building when suddenly her desk exploded into chunks of wood in front of her. Ms. [VICTIM ] advised she heard a loud noise and covered her ears. Canvassing the building I observed a bullet hole in the front door of the leasing office. I observed a bullet hole through the wall of Ms. [VICTIM ]’s Officer. And finally, another hole directly through Ms. [VICTIM ]’s desk where she had been seated at the time. If Ms. [VICTIM ] had been seated only a foot to the left she would have been struck by the bullet.
Detectives responded and took over the investigation. Forensics responded.
I remained on the scene and provided security until it was cleared to be broken down by a supervisor.
