This officer was on duty downtown at a traffic control point at W Bryan Race B Street and Barnard Street, when I was approached by a citizen who advised me about a fight in Ellise Square. I exited my vehicle and noticed a large number of subjects yelling and a black male who fled after removing his shirt in an attempt to fight. As I walked through the square, I could smell the odor of pepper spray in the air. I requested other units to Ellise Square. When the male fled after I told him repeatedly to come to me and tell me what was going on. I advised units the male fled south on Barnard Street.
I was approached by Alyria Gould who was saying she didn’t give a fuk and “I’m going to kill these hes”. She then reached to my right for my firearm. I swept her hand off my weapon and I grabbed her arms as she replied “No, No”. She told me I could arrest her right then and she didn’t give a fuk. She replied “No”, then she lunged and reached and went to grab my firearm once more. Officers Hudson, Johnson and I grabbed Gould and attempted to arrest her. She told them to let her go and that she didn’t give a fuk after they told her she went for my weapon.
She resisted and was taken to the ground. I cuffed her and was approached from the rear by another female, while I was taking Gould into custody. I was in the act of arresting Gould when, I was approached by a female in a black shirt and Jones, who was later arrested for fighting. I also yelled at another female in a gray shirt who said she was Gould’s cousin. I told her to get back and she told me not to touch her. I told her if she didn’t want me to touch her, then she needed to get back. I went back to address Gould who was pepper sprayed in the 1st fight. I called for EMS and a transport unit.
Some other female started talking and Gould attempted to pull away from me while she was in handcuffs to fight them. Gould told me this was not going down like this and I knew her mother and that I may as well call SWAT. Gould asked me to let her go but told me she couldn’t promise she wasn’t going to do anything crazy. Her friend claimed that she was going . Gould told me it was a sin to lie. I had to adjust her cuffs because she kept spinning her wrist.
I had Gould checked by a female officer. While she was being checked Gould asked about the people who assaulted her, she also said “I know I tried to grab your weapon, but”. Officer Johnson kept trying to reason with Gould, but she told me she didn’t want to talk to them anymore and asked me to put her in the car. I walked Gould to Cpl. Drongowski’s vehicle, we were followed by the female in gray. I told Cpl. Drongowski that EMS was on the way.
While I was dealing with paperwork on Gould, the second fight broke out and Jones was seen striking another female in the head. Jones was told the police were coming and another female was trying to pull her back. Nails who was told to leave earlier, was fighting. I pulled Jones off and she attempted to pull away from me. I told her to bring her a*s. I passed her over to Cpl. Drongowski.
I saw Gibbs have a female in on hand and a gun in his right hand. After I passed off Jones, I warned the other officers about Gibbs having a gun. I saw him put the gun in his right pocket. I approached him a pulled my firearm and ordered him to drop the gun and get on the ground. He claimed he didn’t have a gun. I removed a Glock 19 pistol from Gibbs right front pocket which was loaded with 21 rounds. I had him cuffed and taken to a vehicle. I went back to Cpl. Drongowski. I was told that Gould had been let out of the vehicle possibly by a female in a gray shirt. She escaped and was chased by Cpl. McCoy.
Nails was pepper sprayed, which meant she was in the 1st fight as well as me seeing her in the 2nd fight. She was placed in a vehicle and taken to the Civic Center. I notified Lt Garvin and Capt Small-Loyd about the show of force. Gould was returned by Cpl. McCoy and transported to the Civic Center.
Once at the Civic Center, I went over the charges. Gibbs said he had the gun not in a holster, but in his waist band of his shorts. He said the gun fell out. I told him the way he was carrying the firearm was dangerous. Gibbs was charged with Reckless Conduct. Jones was charged with Affray, disorderly conduct, obstruction and curfew violation. Nails was charged with Affray and disorderly conduct. Gould was charged with Attempted Removal of Weapon from Public Official, Escape, Terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and Obstruction.
Gould and Nails were transported to Memorial Medical Center for med clearance. Nails said she didn’t know she was going to catch Gould downtown. My BWC was activated. The gun was logged into the property room.
