On 07-30-2024 at approximately 1428 hours, Deputy Winkler was dispatched to [100 BLOCK] Hardee Road in regard to a traumatic injury.
While en-route, Whitfield County Dispatch advised Deputy Winkler that the Victim, Mrs. [VICTIM #1] had left the scene and was at her neighbor’s house located at [200 BLOCK] Hardee Road. Fire Department Personnel was out with the Victim. The Offender, Mr. Wesley Cochran who was the Victim’s son, was presumed to be inside the residence at [100 BLOCK] Hardee Road.
Deputy Winkler along with Deputy Spivey arrived and attempted to contact Mr. Cochran. No one answered the door so Deputies Winkler and Spivey secured the residence while Lieutenant Rann spoke to the Victim and further assessed the situation.
Upon speaking to Mrs. [VICTIM #1] Lieutenant Rann was given permission to have Deputies enter her residence to look for the Offender. Deputy Tabellion arrived on scene and he along with Deputies Winkler and Spivey cleared the residence. After the residence was cleared, Deputy Winkler walked to [200 BLOCK] Hardee Road to speak to the Victim. At that time, Detective Burnette had arrived on scene and was in the process of interviewing Mrs. [VICTIM #1]. Deputy Winkler waited until Detective Burnette finished and spoke briefly to Mrs. [VICTIM #1] before releasing her to leave for treatment.
Mrs. [VICTIM #1] said Mr. Cochran was on drugs and had become angry over some kitchen wrap. She then picked up some garbage which angered Mr. Cochran more. Mrs. [VICTIM #1] said he came toward her and stabbed her in the arm with a kitchen knife. She said she left for her neighbor’s house, with him following her trying to get her to stop. She wasn’t sure what he intended to do if she hadn’t continued to her neighbor’s, but she was in fear for her life and thought he might kill her.
Shortly before Mrs. [VICTIM #1] was transported for treatment, Sergeant Giles and Sergeant Barnett contacted the Offender walking down Old Dixie Highway in the area of Adams Road. After confirming the identity of the subject, Sergeant Giles detained Mr. Cochran and returned with him to the scene.
Upon arrival, Deputy Pangle photographed Mr. Cochran, Deputy Winkler performed a pat down search, checking his hand cuffs for fit and confirming double lock before assisting him into the back of his patrol vehicle. Deputy Winkler transported Mr. Cochran to Whitfield County Detention center without incident, then seized Mr. Cochran’s shirt and pants for evidence before he released custody over to Booking Staff.
Mr. Cochran also had an active Warrant out of Gordon County. Deputy Winkler confirmed with Whitfield County Dispatch that they had been notified of Mr. Cochran’s arrest and confirmed they had placed a hold. Deputy Winkler packaged, then entered the clothing into evidence, completed his investigation of the incident and the case was turned over to Detectives.
