On June 10, 2024, I responded to Butterworth Rd/Harbin St in reference to a hit and run. Upon arrival, the caller, Leonel Castillo Jr, was getting checked out by the fire department. I went to speak with a female passenger, [REDACTED]. I asked [REDACTED] what occurred. She stated they were traveling on Butterworth Rd traveling eastbound while a red Ford Explorer came into their lane from the opposite lane. She stated Leonel swerved over a bit, but the Ford Explorer struck the driver side of their vehicle and continued westbound. She said Leonel turned around and caught up to the vehicle and she took a picture of the license plate ([REDACTED]). She said the driver side mirror is damaged or missing on the suspect vehicle. I asked if she got a look at the driver. She said she thinks it was a male, but was not sure of race or anything else.
I went to speak with Leonel when the fire department was finished. I asked him what occurred. He stated a red SUV came into his lane and sideswiped him. He turned around and got back behind the vehicle, which ended up turning left onto Knox Bridge Hwy towards Cartersville. I asked him if he saw the driver. He stated he didn’t because the tint was too dark on the suspect vehicle.
Leonel’s vehicle, a black 2021 Kia Seltos (Tag# [REDACTED]), had a scratch starting at the front driver side fender and went all the way to the rear of the vehicle. The driver side mirror was also hanging. I did notice on the rear driver side door there was red paint transfer consistent with the suspect vehicle’s color. I ran the suspect vehicle and it returned to Sean Myrick out of Cartersville.
I then began running all the other information through GCIC. When I ran Leonel’s license, it returned as suspended. It showed it was suspended on 2/27/2023 for DUI. There was no DUI permit listed for work or school listed on the returns. I went to Leonel and told him his license was suspended. He stated he did not know. I told him it was for a DUI. He stated he did get something in the mail after the DUI that said his license was suspended and he mailed his license back. He said he completed his court stuff and went to the DMV where they gave him another license and he assumed he was good. I told him his status is still suspended and I was going to issue him a citation. I did confirm [REDACTED] had a valid license and told him she will have to drive. I completed a traffic citation (S-010151) for driving on a suspended license and also completed the DDS Official Notice of Suspension Service by Law Enforcement. Leonel signed both without issue.
I also provided Leonel with a case card with the case number for the report. I explained to him an accident and investigative report will be written for the hit and run.
I called the phone numbers I located for Sean to attempt to get his statement, but both numbers were out of service. I spoke with Deputy Black with the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office. I asked if he could attempt to locate the suspect vehicle at the registered owners address. He went by the residence and stated the grass is overly grown and there is junk vehicles around the property. He said he isn’t sure if anyone actually lives at this address.
